Both are unmissable boat tours through the karst, about 25 minutes apart, and if you can, doing both is genuinely worth it. But if you must choose one, here's how they differ.
| Trang An | Tam Coc | |

| Status | UNESCO World Heritage | Classic "Ha Long on land" |
| Length | Longer (~2.5-3 hrs) | Shorter (~1.5-2 hrs) |
| Ticket (approx) | ~300,000 VND pp | ~300,000 VND pp |
| Highlight | Caves & film locations | Foot-rowing, golden rice (May-Jun) |
…you want the full spectacle: a longer route through long, low caves to hidden temples, on impossibly green water. It carries UNESCO status and was a filming location for Kong: Skull Island. The best all-rounder if you only do one. Detail at Hoa Lu Tourism and Visit Hoa Lu.
…you want the rice-field classic: boats rowed by foot between paddies and karst, especially magical during the golden harvest in late May-June. Shorter and very photogenic. Detail at Hoa Lu Tourism.
They're close enough to combine in one day, Trang An in the morning, Tam Coc in the afternoon (or vice versa). For a head-to-head from people who've rowed both routes, see Hoa Lu Tourism's comparison and Visit Hoa Lu's take.
Good to know: boat tickets cover a shared boat (usually up to 4-5 people). A small tip for the rower is customary and appreciated.
